AI lab offers free home repairs to train robots
Original: AI lab offers free plumbing and HVAC repairs to train AI robots
An artificial intelligence lab is providing free plumbing, HVAC, electrical, air duct cleaning and carpet cleaning services across three US cities, using wearable cameras to record technicians performing the repairs. The recorded footage is used as training data for AI-powered robots. The unusual arrangement has drawn attention because homeowners get free skilled labor while the lab gains access to hard-to-collect real-world repair demonstrations for robotics development.
Why now: The trade-off of free home services in exchange for recording workers to train robots is a novel and somewhat surprising data-collection strategy.
