ICE stores protester photos in Palantir database
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is reportedly collecting photographs of people attending protests and storing them in a database built by the data-analytics firm Palantir. The disclosure has drawn criticism from civil liberties groups and lawmakers, who say the practice amounts to surveillance of political activity without clear legal authority. Supporters of tighter immigration enforcement have argued the tools are legitimate for identifying people facing deportation.
Why now: New concerns about government surveillance of political dissent have surfaced amid ongoing immigration protests in the United States.
