A campaign group petition is circulating calling on UN member states to block Lana Nusseibeh, the UAE's former ambassador to the United Nations, from succeeding António Guterres as UN Secretary General. The petition argues the UAE should be disqualified over its alleged role in the conflict in Sudan's Darfur region, which campaigners describe as genocide.
Why now: Speculation over candidates to succeed António Guterres as UN Secretary General is active, and critics are using Darfur allegations against the UAE to oppose Nusseibeh's candidacy.
