Campaigners are backing an Avaaz petition calling on the UN to block Lana Nusseibeh's candidacy for UN Secretary General, arguing the United Arab Emirates is implicated in genocide in Sudan's Darfur region and should therefore not hold the organisation's top post. Nusseibeh, the UAE's former ambassador to the UN, is discussed as a candidate amid ongoing scrutiny of foreign involvement in the Darfur conflict.
Why now: Ongoing fighting in Darfur and allegations of UAE involvement have put the Emirati candidate's bid for UN Secretary General under challenge.
