A petition by the advocacy group Avaaz is calling on the UN to block the appointment of Emirati diplomat Lana Nusseibeh as UN Secretary General, citing the UAE's alleged implication in genocide in Darfur, Sudan. The campaign links her candidacy to the UAE's reported role in arming and supporting militias in the conflict, and is being shared by campaigners urging signatories to act before the selection process advances.
Why now: The UN Secretary General selection process is under way and campaigners want to tie the UAE's alleged role in Darfur to Nusseibeh's candidacy.
