Children invited to rear harvest mice at home for Devon release
Original: Wanted: children to rear harvest mice at home for wild release in Devon
Two Devon teenagers, Eva Wishart and Emily Smith, have launched a project inviting children to raise harvest mice at home before releasing them into the wild. The scheme aims to breed and release 250 of the tiny mammals by September to boost local populations. The unusual call for young volunteer conservationists has drawn attention for its hands-on approach to wildlife recovery.
Why now: The novel idea of enlisting children to breed endangered mice at home makes for striking conservation news.
