A German commentary argues that brutal drug-related crime is rising sharply and connects the trend to the legalization of cannabis. The piece feeds into an ongoing political dispute, with figures such as Friedrich Merz and Markus Söder on the conservative side criticizing legalization, while Lars Klingbeil's camp is associated with defending it. Critics of legalization are citing crime figures to press for a policy reversal.
Why now: Cannabis legalization remains a polarizing issue in German politics and crime statistics are being used to challenge it.
