YouTuber's police-tracking camera prompts police home visit
Original: YouTuber builds 'Flock-like' camera to track police vehicles, gets police visit
A Canadian YouTuber built a camera system modeled on Flock safety cameras, but programmed to track police vehicles exclusively. After the project became public, officers visited his home to raise privacy concerns about the device. The project has drawn attention for turning automated license-plate surveillance technology back onto law enforcement itself, raising questions about who is subject to tracking.
Why now: The inversion of surveillance technology onto police, and the police response to it, strikes a nerve in debates over privacy and accountability.
