A quotation attributed to the 19th-century American orator and freethinker Robert G. Ingersoll is being shared: 'If the people were a little more ignorant, astrology would flourish – if a little more enlightened, religion would perish.' Users posting it tag it with atheism, faith and god, using the line to argue that religion survives on limited education and would fade under greater enlightenment.
Why now: The sharp quip about religion and ignorance resonates with secular users debating faith, science and superstition.
