A quotation attributed to 19th-century American orator Robert G. Ingersoll is being shared widely: "If the people were a little more ignorant, astrology would flourish – if a little more enlightened, religion would perish." The line frames organised religion and astrology together as products of insufficient enlightenment, and is circulating among users discussing atheism, faith and scepticism.
Why now: The quote neatly captures ongoing online debates between secular sceptics and religious believers, prompting shares among atheist and freethought communities.
