A line from the 19th-century American freethinker Robert G. Ingersoll is being shared: 'If the people were a little more ignorant, astrology would flourish — if a little more enlightened, religion would perish.' The quote frames religion and superstition as products of limited enlightenment, and it is drawing attention among readers debating atheism, faith and reason.
Why now: The quote's provocative claim that greater enlightenment would end religion sparks debate between believers and atheists.
