Google Accused of Felling 300 Hectares of Forest for Finnish Data Centre
Original: Google Accused of Felling 300 Hectares of Forest for a Finnish Data Centre
Google is facing accusations that it cleared 300 hectares of forest in Finland to make way for a data centre. The claim has drawn criticism because it clashes with the company's public commitments to sustainability and carbon-free operations. Commenters are debating whether tech companies' rapid data centre expansion is outweighing their environmental pledges, and whether the land clearing was legally permitted.
Why now: Growing scrutiny of the environmental cost of AI-driven data centre expansion, especially when it conflicts with Google's green image.
