Micro Center demands ID and no-export pledge for RTX 5090 buyers
Original: Micro Center requires photo ID and signed no-export pledge to buy gaming GPU
Electronics retailer Micro Center is requiring customers to show photo ID and sign a declaration promising the RTX 5090 graphics card will stay in the US before they can buy it. Buyers must disclose where the card will be installed. The policy, reportedly tied to export controls on advanced chips, has prompted debate about how far retailers will go to enforce compliance and what it means for scalping and gray-market resales.
Why now: A major retailer's strict enforcement of GPU export rules is an unusual new hurdle for gamers, drawing attention amid ongoing chip export controls and shortages.
