A new study suggests virtual reality can trigger mystical experiences in users without the use of psychedelics. Researchers found that immersive VR environments were capable of producing feelings of transcendence and connectedness typically associated with spiritual or psychedelic states. The findings are drawing attention from those interested in psychology, neuroscience, and the intersection of technology and religion.
Why now: The finding challenges assumptions that mystical states require drugs or religious settings, sparking interest in VR's psychological and spiritual potential.
