A new study suggests virtual reality can induce mystical-type experiences in users, similar in some ways to those reported with psychedelic substances. The finding is drawing attention in discussions about the intersection of technology, psychology and religion, raising questions about how immersive environments can alter perception and produce profound subjective experiences without drugs.
Why now: People are intrigued that technology alone, without psychedelics, may reliably produce profound spiritual-like experiences.
