Alberta separatists sought US help
Reports say Alberta separatist figures reached out to the United States for support in their push to take the province out of Canada. The claim has fuelled debate about sovereignty movements in Western Canada and their foreign connections, drawing criticism from federalists and attention from commentators speculating about what form of US assistance was sought and whether any was offered.
Why now: The idea of a Canadian province courting US support touches on sensitive questions of national unity and sovereignty at a tense moment in Canada-US relations.
