Alberta separatists sought US backing
Original: Alberta separatists sought US help
Alberta separatist figures reportedly reached out to the United States for support in their push to break away from Canada. The approach has drawn criticism in Canada, with opponents framing it as unpatriotic and alarming at a time of heightened sensitivity over Canadian sovereignty and US-Canada relations. Supporters of separation argue western grievances with Ottawa justify seeking outside sympathy.
Why now: Tensions over Canadian sovereignty and Alberta's separatist movement are in the news, making the reported US outreach contentious.
