EU countries prepare deportation centers in Africa
Original: 🔴DW News October 1: EU countries prepare deportation centers in Africa
DW News reports that European Union countries are preparing to establish deportation centers in Africa, an approach aimed at processing returns of rejected asylum seekers outside Europe. The plan echoes earlier proposals like the EU-Tunisia migration deal and Italy's Albania scheme, and is drawing criticism from human rights groups who question the legality and conditions of outsourcing asylum procedures to third countries.
Why now: Migration policy is a contentious EU issue and outsourcing deportation processing to Africa is a controversial new step.
