Engineers in Singapore have unveiled ALBATROSS, a roughly one-kilogram robot released from a drone at about 150 metres. It spins its limbs to slow its fall from around 110 to 24 km/h, then converts into a small sailboat steered by a fish-like rudder. The whole machine runs on just three actuators and three sensors, impressing robotics watchers with its simplicity.

Why now: Its unusual drone-to-sailboat transformation and minimal actuator design make it a striking robotics story.
