Engineers in Singapore have unveiled ALBATROSS, a roughly 1 kg robot that falls from a drone at around 150 metres, spinning its limbs to slow its descent from about 110 to 24 km/h. It then converts into a sailboat, steering with a fish-like rudder. The design uses just three actuators and three sensors, drawing attention for its multi-modal mobility.

Why now: The unusual combination of falling, self-braking and transforming into a sailboat makes it a striking robotics demonstration.
