Original: "The UN just passed the first declaration on sea level rise, protecting island nations' sovereignty" # UN # UnitedNation
The United Nations has adopted its first declaration on sea level rise, a landmark move aimed at protecting the sovereignty of low-lying island nations threatened by rising oceans. The declaration affirms that statehood and maritime rights persist even as coastlines shift or land disappears, offering legal reassurance to countries like small island states in the Pacific facing existential climate threats.
Why now: It marks the first time the UN has addressed sea level rise and island nations' sovereignty in a formal declaration.
