UN passes first declaration on sea level rise

Original: "The UN just passed the first declaration on sea level rise, protecting island nations' sovereignty" # UN # UnitedNation

The United Nations has adopted its first declaration on sea level rise, a move designed to protect the sovereignty of low-lying island nations whose territory could be submerged as oceans rise. Supporters say it preserves island states' maritime rights and legal status even if their land disappears, marking a milestone for small island developing states facing existential climate threats.

Why now: It is the first time the UN has addressed the legal and sovereignty implications of rising seas for island nations.
