Donald Trump has threatened France and Germany with an embargo on American diesel unless they draw on their emergency stocks, according to reports circulating in French-language commentary. Reaction online has been sharply critical, with one widely shared comment dismissing the threat as outside interference in European political decisions. The dispute adds to trade tensions between Washington and major EU economies.

Why now: A fresh threat of US trade retaliation against two major European allies touches energy supply and transatlantic relations.
