Pete Hegseth appoints Elon Musk to US warfare taskforce

Original: Pete Hegseth appoints Elon Musk to US taskforce on future of warfare

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has appointed Elon Musk to a taskforce on the future of warfare, according to a Guardian report dated 30 September 2026. The move places the tech billionaire in a formal advisory role on military innovation, a pairing that is drawing attention given Musk's business interests and government ties.

Why now: The unusually close involvement of a billionaire defence contractor's owner in shaping US military policy is prompting debate about conflicts of interest and the militarisation of tech.
