Human rights groups ask UN to intervene over ICE detainee secrecy
Original: Human rights groups ask UN panel to help end ICE's effort to hide locations of detainees
Human rights organisations have petitioned a United Nations panel to pressure US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to stop concealing where detainees are being held. The groups argue that hiding detainees' locations obstructs families and lawyers trying to find them and violates international human rights obligations. The petition has been picked up by US and regional outlets, adding to ongoing scrutiny of ICE detention practices under the Trump administration's immigration crackdown.
Why now: It adds to the current, highly charged debate over US immigration enforcement and detention transparency.
