Human Rights Groups Urge UN to Intervene in ICE Detainee Transparency
Original: Human rights groups ask UN panel to help end ICE's effort to hide locations of detainees
Human rights organizations are asking a United Nations panel to pressure US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to stop concealing the locations of people in its custody. The groups argue that hiding where detainees are held blocks families and lawyers from reaching them and violates international human rights standards. Advocates want the UN body to weigh in and push the US government toward greater transparency in immigration detention.
Why now: Rights groups have escalated their challenge to ICE detention practices to an international forum, drawing fresh attention to US immigration enforcement.
