Trump says Kim Jong Un can keep nuclear weapons because 'he likes me'
Original: Trump says it’s fine for Kim Jong Un to have nuclear weapons because ‘he likes me’
Donald Trump said it is fine for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to possess nuclear weapons, citing their personal relationship and saying 'he likes me'. The remarks mark a striking shift from decades of US policy that sought to denuclearise the Korean peninsula, and have drawn criticism from security experts who argue North Korea's arsenal remains a direct threat to the US and its allies.
Why now: Trump's dismissal of the nuclear threat on personal grounds contradicts long-standing US non-proliferation policy towards North Korea.
