The snake god Glycon and the writer who mocked him
Original: the snake with a mans face: glycon, alexander and the man who tried to kill a god with a book Somewhere around the 150s
Around 150 AD, a town called Abonoteichus on the Black Sea coast of Paphlagonia, in what is now northern Turkey, acquired a new god: Glycon, a snake said to have a human face. The cult was founded by a man named Alexander. The satirist Lucian of Samosata later attacked it in a book, famously trying to expose the god as a fraud with his pen.
Why now: The strange image of a serpent with a man's face, and Lucian's literary attempt to kill the cult, keeps drawing curiosity about ancient religion and satire.
