The snake god Glycon and the man who mocked him with a book

Original: the snake with a mans face: glycon, alexander and the man who tried to kill a god with a book Somewhere around the 150s

Around the 150s AD, the town of Abonoteichus on the Black Sea coast of Paphlagonia, in what is now northern Turkey, embraced a new deity: Glycon, a snake said to have a human face. The snake god was promoted by Alexander, a local figure who ran an oracle that drew followers across the Roman world. The satirist Lucian later attacked the cult, trying to kill the god's reputation with a book.

Why now: The ancient tale of a fake snake god and Lucian's satirical takedown is circulating widely online right now.
