Pope Leo XIV, a Villanova alumnus, told the basketball teams from his alma mater and Catholic rival Notre Dame that when it comes to sport, the pontiff is neutral. His lighthearted declaration of impartiality is drawing attention as the two Catholic universities face off, with many amused that the first American pope refused to back his own school.
Why now: The pope's playful refusal to favour his own alma mater in a Catholic college basketball matchup is charming sports fans.
