Pope Leo XIV told the basketball teams of Villanova, his alma mater, and Notre Dame that when it comes to sport, the pontiff is neutral. The remark, made to two prominent Catholic universities, is being shared as a lighthearted moment blending the papacy and college basketball, with readers amused by the pope sidestepping any hint of favoritism toward his former school.
Why now: The pope's playful claim of neutrality between his alma mater and a rival Catholic university is an unusual, charming crossover of religion and college sport.
