FEMA and the FCC will run a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System on November 17 at 2:20 p.m. ET, interrupting TV and radio broadcasts across the United States; a backup date of December 3 is set. The test is landing at the same time as reports that at least 23 countries and the EU are urging citizens to stock up on emergency supplies, fueling online speculation linking the two events.

Why now: The timing alongside government stockpile advisories abroad is driving speculation, even though the alert is a routine scheduled test.
