Smithsonian Zoo Tracks Bats by Satellite in Myanmar
Original: Satellite Tracking of Bats in Myanmar
The Smithsonian's National Zoo is running a project to satellite-track bats in Myanmar, using tracking devices to follow the animals' movements across the region. Researchers say the data helps map bat flight paths, roosting sites and habitats. The work is drawing attention because bats are studied globally as reservoirs of viruses with potential to spill over into humans.
Why now: Interest in bat research and disease monitoring is high, making satellite tracking of bats newsworthy.
