Data centers could erase decades of air quality gains
A new report warns that the rapid growth of data centers, driven largely by artificial intelligence, is producing enough air pollution to undo decades of air quality improvements. Emissions from power generation feeding the facilities are the main concern, and commentators are debating whether AI's energy demands can be reconciled with public health and climate goals.
Why now: AI's surging energy use and its environmental and health costs are drawing fresh scrutiny.
