Data centers could erase decades of air quality gains
A new report warns that the rapid growth of data centers, driven largely by artificial intelligence, is generating enough pollution to undo decades of progress on air quality. The facilities' rising energy demand, often met by fossil fuel power plants, is pushing emissions higher in communities near them, prompting concern among researchers and environmental advocates.
Why now: Concern over AI's surging energy use and its environmental toll is growing as new data center construction accelerates.
