Russian satellite makes unprecedented close approach of another spacecraft
Original: iceye
A Russian satellite has carried out what analysts call a possibly unprecedented close approach of another spacecraft in orbit, manoeuvring near it without prior permission or notification, according to CNN. Space-tracking experts are examining the incident, which raises fresh concerns about unsafe orbital behaviour, the risks of collision, and the growing potential for satellites to be used to interfere with or monitor other nations' space assets.
Why now: The unusual unauthorised proximity manoeuvre has alarmed the space community amid rising tensions over military activity in orbit.
