The Simpsons recasts Apu, replacing Hank Azaria
Original: hank azaria
The Simpsons has given Apu Nahasapeemapetilon a new voice, with actor Sunil Malhotra taking over the role from Hank Azaria. Azaria stepped away from the character in 2020 amid criticism over the stereotypical portrayal of Indian Americans, and The Guardian frames the recasting as 'a reclamation'. Commentators are weighing whether the change addresses long-running concerns about representation in the long-running animated series.
Why now: A major recasting decision on a flagship animated show, following years of controversy over Apu's portrayal, is drawing fresh attention.
