Japan Readies Historic Mars Moons Mission: MMX Probe Targets First-Ever Sample Return to Earth
Japan is preparing a landmark mission to Mars's moons, with its MMX probe aiming to collect the first-ever samples from the Red Planet's satellites and bring them back to Earth. The mission is being watched closely by the international space community, as no spacecraft has ever returned material from Mars or its moons, and success would mark a major milestone for Japan's space programme.
Why now: The mission is generating attention because it would achieve the first-ever sample return from Mars's moons, a major space exploration milestone.
