Japan launches MMX mission to sample Mars moon Phobos
Original: MMX Mission: Japan Launches First Spacecraft to Retrieve Samples from Mars Moon Phobos
Japan has launched its MMX (Martian Moons eXploration) mission, the first spacecraft tasked with returning samples from Phobos, the larger of Mars's two moons. The mission aims to collect material that could reveal how Mars and its moons formed. If successful, it would make Japan the first country to bring samples back from another planet's moon.
Why now: The launch of a first-of-its-kind sample-return mission to Mars's moon is a major milestone in space exploration.
