The growing row over competitive yoga
Original: ‘This is horrifying. This is madness’: the row over competitive yoga
A debate is under way over competitive yoga, with critics denouncing the idea of turning the practice into a contest. Detractors argue that pitting practitioners against each other betrays yoga's spiritual and meditative roots, with some calling the trend 'horrifying' and 'madness'. Supporters see recognition and sport-style formats as a way to raise the profile and standards of the discipline.
Why now: Competitive yoga formats and possible recognition as a sport have reignited arguments over whether yoga should be judged at all.
