Original: US holds ‘unusual’ civil-military meeting in Tokyo ahead of Trump’s China trip
United States officials convened an unusual civil-military meeting in Tokyo as preparations continue for President Trump's trip to China. The gathering brought together American diplomatic and defense representatives in Japan, a key US ally in the region, amid ongoing strategic talks over China policy and Indo-Pacific security. The timing, just before the presidential visit to Beijing, has drawn attention to how Washington is coordinating messaging with its allies ahead of direct engagement with Chinese leaders.
Why now: The meeting's unusual format and timing just before Trump's China trip raise questions about US strategy and coordination with Japan.
