United States officials convened an unusual civil-military meeting in Tokyo ahead of President Trump's trip to China. The gathering is being read as an effort to coordinate policy and reassure allies in the region, particularly Japan, as Washington prepares for high-stakes talks with Beijing. Analysts note the format and timing are atypical, underscoring heightened attention to alliance management as Trump heads into negotiations with Chinese leaders.
Why now: Trump's upcoming China trip is raising questions about US strategy in Asia and how allies like Japan will be kept in the loop.
