Netherlands resists EU budget proposal as talks stall

Original: begroting van de europese unie

The European Union's multi-year budget is back in the spotlight after a revised proposal cuts billions from spending. Dutch finance state secretary Berendsen is pushing for a new proposal, but the Dutch cabinet says the latest offer, with billions less in spending, is still not enough. Reports note the Netherlands is opposing the budget while holding little real influence over the outcome, a situation one commentator called 'a very strange arrangement'.

Why now: A new EU budget proposal with reduced spending has not satisfied the Dutch cabinet, keeping the negotiation in the Dutch news.
