Armed security personnel in combat gear have been deployed across central Delhi, from Mandi House to Firoz Shah Road, as protesters attempted to march toward Jantar Mantar. Critics say the show of force against demonstrators shows the government fears its own citizens and that regular police are no longer considered sufficient to control dissent.

Why now: Images and reports of heavily armed troops confronting peaceful protesters in the capital are drawing attention and criticism.
