Sevran school protesters say French state has abandoned them
Original: 'We're not asking for luxury': school protesters in Paris suburb feel abandoned by French state https://www.theguardian.
Protesters in Sevran, a working-class suburb north of Paris, are demonstrating over poor conditions in local schools, saying they are not asking for luxury but for basic dignity. Residents describe a chronic neglect by the French state of schools in the banlieues, where overcrowding, crumbling buildings and understaffing have fuelled anger and drawn national attention to inequalities in education funding.
Why now: The protests have reignited debate over state neglect of schools in France's poorer suburbs.
