Yamaguchi-gumi arrests fuel renewed gang crackdown talk

Original: 山口組

Japanese police have made a series of arrests involving Yamaguchi-gumi-linked figures. In Kyoto, a former gang executive and Takumi-kai boss was detained on extortion charges, while in Toyama a Yamaguchi-gumi-affiliated boss and another man were arrested for allegedly extorting about 13 million yen from a man in his twenties. In Oita, a raid targeted an office over the alleged abduction of a woman for loan-sharking. Reports also say removal of the group's special conflict designation is receding, with police on alert for it going underground.

Why now: A wave of arrests of Yamaguchi-gumi-affiliated bosses and warnings about the gang going underground are drawing attention to Japan's largest yakuza group.
