Yamaguchi-gumi arrests and gang crackdown warnings in Japan

Original: 山口組

Japanese media are reporting a string of developments around the Yamaguchi-gumi crime syndicate. Two members including a gang boss were arrested in Toyama for extorting about 13 million yen from a man in his twenties, while police in Oita raided an office over the alleged abduction of a woman for illegal lending. A former Tokyo police officer has also spoken publicly about gang hand signals, and reports warn the group faces prolonged sanctions and risk of internal strife.

Why now: Multiple fresh arrests and warnings of escalating conflict involving Japan's largest yakuza group are drawing attention.
