Former JNU student leader Umar Khalid, who has been jailed in Delhi since 2020 in the Delhi riots conspiracy case, has been given an International Human Rights Award. The announcement has reignited debate in India, with supporters calling it recognition of his treatment and critics objecting to honouring an accused in an ongoing case.

Why now: The award to a jailed Indian activist is politically charged and touches ongoing arguments over India's human rights record.
