UN urges faster climate action ahead of COP31 summit
Original: ‘Overshoot is not a reason to surrender’: UN calls for accelerated climate action ahead of COP31 summit
The United Nations has issued a call for countries to speed up climate action ahead of the COP31 summit, warning that overshooting agreed warming limits must not lead to complacency. In its message, the UN stressed that 'overshoot is not a reason to surrender', urging governments to intensify emissions cuts and adaptation efforts despite projections that temperature targets may be temporarily exceeded.
Why now: The UN's warning comes as nations prepare for the COP31 climate summit, focusing attention on the gap between climate pledges and current warming trajectories.
