The people holding up the internet
A new data visualisation project, 'The people holding up the internet', highlights the workers who keep the internet running, from cable layers and data centre staff to network engineers. Shared on Hacker News, it quickly drew attention and discussion, with readers praising the reminder that online life depends on largely unseen human labour maintaining physical infrastructure around the world.
Why now: The project reframes the internet as physical infrastructure maintained by often invisible workers, a fresh angle for tech audiences.
